To work with one's hands
When you work at a desk all day you can't help but realize something went wrong in our progression as a species. Don't get me wrong, I love technology and the cool things you can do with it. Sitting at a desk, however, bashing a keyboard is not ideal (I do sense the irony in a sentence as I bash a keyboard in my free time to make this blog post).
Over the years I've done some work with my hands. I dabbled as an involuntary car mechanic. It was involuntary as I had no interest in it but because my brother and I drove a 1966 VW Beetle, it broke down every day that ends with a Y... and it was our only transport for a chunk of time. It was a pain but over time I began to enjoy parts of it. There is a great sense of accomplishment when you hammer away at something that doesn't work and then after some time, cuts, bruises, and a lot of WD40, the car starts again! It is quite the feeling. Makes me wonder what that caveman who managed to lit his own fire felt like.... He must have had one of those framed motivational on his cave wall to keep him going in the tough times
So I threw a dart on a board of ideas and it landed on leather working. well close... I drew inspiration from Little King Goods an awesome Youtube channel that is really informative if you wanna get started. Also a shout-out to James McKinven and his WhitStable Craft Co which is really cool. So I ordered a small kit with some basic cheap tools and a cut of smooth brown leather... Curious to see where it goes
